A simple Android app for general aviation pilots with various useful features both during flight preparation and during the execution of the flight. Oh, and it's free.
Feature overview
GPS Navigation around the world
If your device has a GPS sensor in it, we can use it. Plan routes with automatic correction for wind and magnetic deviation, see your accurate ETA per waypoint, monitor your fuel endurance and use Direct-To to find airports close to your current location.
Real-time air traffic
Improve your situational awareness by observing real-time traffic around your area of operation. Get notified when another aircraft comes close to you so you can take timely action to avoid a collision. Stay ahead of the situation with real-time data gathered from various ADSB and MLAT aggregator services.
NOTAMs
Read NOTAMs for specific airfields, FIRs or along your planned route. Filter out NOTAMs based on your specific flight requirements, and add relevant NOTAMs to the map so you can observe them during flight.
Know your weather
Weather radar and satellite IR imagery from Rainviewer show development of rain and cloud coverage in great clarity. METAR/TAF decoding for any reporting station around the world give you a good picture of the current conditions at your desired airfield, and automatic calculation of crosswind components helps you make the decission to fly or not. Stay up-to-date on the latest weather developments during flight and make the call to divert before you find yourself in IMC.
Global coverage, no problem
Global aeronautical databases are included in JVFR for free. Check the weather in Tokyo, read the NOTAMs for Chicago, observe aeronautical maps in Iceland and see live traffic overhead Amsterdam without paywalls. As long as you're on Earth, we should have you covered.
Mass & Balance
Automatically perform mass & balance calculations for any change to your current aircraft setup. Calculate required fuel for your trip and reserves, and make sure you reach your destination without having to perform a glide in. Best of all, do it all in whatever unit you prefer. Personally I quite like kilograms.
Cross-platform
capability
JVFR is built to work on any device you own, whether it is iOS, Android or Windows based. Fully responsive design ensures you only see the information you need to see in the moment.
Why free?
The developer first started developing JVFR for personal use during his PPL training. The point of the app was to make the whole process of flight preparation more convenient, and centralize much of the information he would normally get from different sources. JVFR relies on many open source projects to make it possible, and I want to contribute to this environment of open development. If this app helps improve aviation safety and makes flying more convenient for my fellow pilots, that's enough for me.
